How to create bundles on Shopify without an app

Option 1: the Shopify Bundles app (fixed bundles and multipacks)

Shopify Bundles is made by Shopify, free and "available on all Shopify plans". It creates a bundle as a product: a fixed set of products, or a multipack of one product. Customers can choose options like size or color for products in the bundle, and inventory updates in real time.

1. In your Shopify admin, install Shopify Bundles from the App Store.
2. Open the app and choose Create bundle.
3. Add the products and quantities, set the bundle price and save.
4. The bundle is a new product: add it to a collection or menu.

Limits, from Shopify's help center: fixed bundles hold up to 30 components; a bundle has at most 3 options and 100 variants; "The Shopify Bundles app doesn't support mix-and-match bundles"; bundles "aren't compatible with purchase options, which includes subscriptions"; inventory is tracked by overall stock, not by location; and when a component's price changes, "the bundle price doesn't update".

Option 2: a Buy X get Y discount (BOGO)

Shopify's Buy X get Y discount gives a free or discounted item when a customer buys a quantity or amount. Create it under Discounts, as an automatic discount or a code.

• "The free or discounted 'get' item is never automatically added to the cart." Customers add it themselves.
• There is no widget: tell shoppers about the deal in your product description or a banner.
• Outside Shopify Plus, products in a Buy X get Y discount cannot get further product discounts.

Option 3: amount off with a minimum quantity (one tier)

An amount off products discount can require a minimum quantity, for example 10% off when the customer buys 2. That gives you one tier. For several tiers you need one automatic discount per tier, and Shopify allows a maximum of 25 active automatic discounts, app discounts included. Nothing shows on the product page unless you add it to your theme.

Option 4: a manual bundle product

Some stores create a regular product called, say, Gift Set, priced as the bundle. It is simple, but Shopify does not know which items are inside: you have to adjust each item's stock by hand when a set sells, and your orders show the set, not the items.

When an app is worth it
